For People Who Look Fine on the Outside and are Quietly Unraveling Inside.

You are capable, productive, and pulled together. Others depend on. You follow through, think ahead, and handle what needs to be handled. From the outside, you look capable and steady.

Internally, it may feel different.

Your mind keeps going long after the day is over. You replay conversations, anticipate problems, and carry responsibilities that are not always yours to carry. Rest can bring guilt instead of relief. Even in quieter moments, it can be hard to fully settle.

Many people live this way for years without realizing how much energy it takes.

When Anxiety Hides Behind Competence

High-functioning anxiety often goes unnoticed because life on the outside continues to work. You may be successful at work, attentive in relationships, and managing daily responsibilities well enough that others assume you are fine. You are even praised for you competence and over-functioning.

At the same time, you may feel stretched thin, mentally busy, impatient with yourself, or unable to enjoy the life you’ve worked hard to build.

This can look like overthinking, perfectionism, chronic tension, difficulty relaxing, irritability, trouble sleeping, or feeling responsible for everyone else’s well-being.

Functioning well and feeling well are not the same thing.

Why These Patterns Develop

For many, anxiety is not random. It often grows out of adaptations that once made sense.

You may have learned early to be dependable, aware of others’ needs, emotionally self-contained, or highly responsible. Over time, those strengths can harden into pressure. What once helped you succeed may now leave little room for ease.

Therapy can help you understand these patterns with compassion and begin changing them in ways that feel realistic and lasting.

How therapy can help

Our work will not focus on surface-level fixes or asking you to simply calm down or relax. You won’t be asked to do more self-care. We will look at what keeps you in a constant state of internal demand and begin shifting those patterns thoughtfully.

Therapy can help you feel less driven by worry, reduce the pressure you place on yourself, respond more steadily to stress, and make room for rest without guilt. It can also help you feel more present in your relationships and more connected to yourself.

What it's like to work with me

Anxiety Therapy California Online (CA, AZ, WA, OR, CO)

I’m Elizabeth Sheen, a licensed therapist based in California, and I work with adults who experience high-functioning anxiety—often in the form of overthinking, internal pressure, and a constant sense of being “on” even when life appears manageable on the outside.

Much of my work focuses on the patterns that develop when responsibility, awareness, and self-discipline have been relied on for a long time. These patterns are often adaptive at first, but over time they can create a persistent sense of mental and emotional strain that is difficult to turn off.

In therapy, we begin to understand how your anxiety operates—not just as thoughts, but as patterns in how you respond to stress, responsibility, and expectation. From there, the work becomes less about managing symptoms and more about changing your relationship to the internal pressure that drives them.

Over time, many people begin to experience more internal space and steadiness—not because life becomes simpler, but because they are no longer meeting every demand with the same level of internal urgency.

High-Functioning Anxiety Therapy

Where you can stop pushing so hard for a bit

If life feels more internally demanding than it appears from the outside, therapy can offer a place to slow down and begin understanding what has been driving that constant sense of pressure.

You don’t need to be in crisis to begin. Often, it starts with a quiet recognition that the way things have been functioning inside of you is no longer sustainable in the same way.

Schedule a free 15-minute phone or video consultation to talk about what you’ve been experiencing, what you’re looking for, and whether working together feels like a good fit.
